Trauma-Informed Addiction Treatment at Valley Vista
Traumatic events like abuse or neglect, familial and social conflict, and violence are associated with the risk of substance abuse. Furthermore, a significant portion of people diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a trauma disorder developed by some people who have been through traumatic events, also have a substance use disorder. As a result, trauma-informed care is absolutely crucial for many people facing drug and alcohol addiction. However, not all addiction treatment centers offer it. So, what should you know if you’re looking for trauma-informed addiction treatment in Vermont? First, let’s define trauma-informed care and discuss how it can make a difference in your experience with substance abuse treatment. Then, we’ll talk about how Valley Vista can help.
What is Trauma-Informed Care?
Trauma-informed care is an approach to or model of treatment that acknowledges the impact of traumatic or stressful events a person has gone through. Instead of focusing on what is “wrong” with a client, it shifts the focus to what happened to them and why what they’re going through now–in this case, substance abuse–makes sense and how to cope in healthier ways.
One of the biggest objectives of trauma-informed care is to supply an environment that facilitates healing and recovery as opposed to re-traumatization, which can be a problem at facilities that are not trauma-informed. Addiction treatment professionals who are trauma-informed are aware of:
- The signs and symptoms of trauma, including the diverse ways they can present from person to person.
- The importance of establishing a sense of safety (and how to create that sense of safety with the client).
- How and why addressing underlying concerns like trauma and trauma disorders in therapy matters for treatment success.
At Valley Vista, we have a team of trauma-informed addiction treatment experts. We focus on whole-person healing and are here to support you or your loved one in overcoming trauma symptoms in addition to drug and alcohol abuse.

Trauma-Informed Addiction Treatment in Vermont at Valley Vista
The Valley Vista team has a deep awareness of the complexity of substance abuse. Part of that is understanding how trauma can intersect with addiction and the role substance abuse can play in a person’s life. For example, using drugs and alcohol can be a mode of self-medication for unaddressed trauma symptoms. In trauma-informed addiction treatment in Vermont at Valley Vista, our medical and mental health professionals use a non-judgmental, collaborative approach built on trust, acceptance, and accountability. With that in mind, here are some of the features that set our center apart.
Valley Vista offers truly gender-specific care, giving you a safe space to address trauma with others who have shared experiences. Since gender can impact your likelihood of going through some types of trauma (e.g., sexual assault) and your experiences with substance abuse, this can be particularly important in the context of trauma-informed addiction treatment. We have a women’s drug rehab center and a men’s drug rehab center located two hours apart from each other.
