Doing Recovery The Right Way

Outpatient Treatment in Vermont at Valley Vista

Not everyone needs to put their life on hold to get well. Valley Vista’s outpatient program gives Vermont residents access to medication management, psychiatric care, and one-on-one counseling — without stepping away from work, family, or daily responsibilities. Most appointments are delivered by telehealth, so consistent care fits into your life instead of the other way around.

Valley Vista is a Vermont drug and alcohol rehab center offering comprehensive, gender-specific care for substance use, alcohol use, and co-occurring disorders. Speak to our admissions team today to learn more about how outpatient treatment can fit your recovery journey.

What Is Outpatient Treatment?

Outpatient treatment is the most flexible level of care in Valley Vista’s continuum, built for individuals who are medically and clinically stable enough to continue their recovery outside of a residential setting. It’s often the right fit for someone stepping down from inpatient or low-intensity inpatient care, or for someone whose substance use or mental health needs don’t require 24-hour supervision but do require consistent, clinically-driven support.

Rather than a full-day schedule of group therapy, outpatient care at Valley Vista centers on three core services: ongoing medication management, psychiatric evaluation and care, and individual (one-to-one) counseling — each delivered on a schedule built around you.

Outpatient Virtual Care
Telehealth-First Care, Built for Vermont

Vermont’s rural geography makes consistent, in-person outpatient care difficult for a lot of people — long drives, unpredictable weather, and limited transportation options can turn a simple weekly appointment into a full-day commitment. Valley Vista’s outpatient program is designed around that reality: the majority of appointments are conducted via secure telehealth, so you can meet with your prescriber or counselor from home, work, or wherever you have privacy and a reliable connection.

Telehealth doesn’t mean less oversight. Your care team still reviews your progress at every visit, adjusts your treatment plan as needed, and stays in close contact with any other providers involved in your care.

Providing Crucial Structure
What's Included in Outpatient Treatment

Medication Management

For clients on medications related to substance use recovery or a co-occurring mental health condition, our clinical team provides ongoing monitoring, dosage adjustments, and prescription management. Medication management appointments are typically brief but frequent enough to catch side effects, interactions, or the need for a change before it becomes a bigger problem.

Psychiatric Care

Our on-site psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide diagnostic evaluation and ongoing psychiatric care for clients managing substance use alongside conditions like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or trauma. Since dual diagnosis is common in early recovery, psychiatric oversight is built into the outpatient program from day one rather than treated as an add-on.

One-to-One Counseling

Each client is paired with a counselor for individual sessions focused on both substance use and any co-occurring mental health concerns. Unlike group-based programming, one-to-one counseling allows your provider to go deeper on what’s specifically driving your recovery — triggers, relationship patterns, past trauma, or the day-to-day challenges of staying sober outside a treatment facility.

Who Outpatient Treatment Is For

Outpatient care at Valley Vista tends to fit best for people who:

  • Have completed inpatient or low-intensity inpatient treatment and are ready to step down to a less intensive level of care
  • Have a stable living environment and support system outside of treatment
  • Need ongoing psychiatric or medication management support without requiring residential supervision
  • Are balancing work, school, or family obligations and need care that flexes around a real schedule
  • Live in a rural part of Vermont where regular in-person appointments aren’t practical

If your needs turn out to be more intensive than outpatient care can support, our team will work with you to transition into a higher level of care, including our low-intensity inpatient or residential inpatient programs.

Benefits of Outpatient Treatment at Valley Vista

Continuity of Care

For clients stepping down from inpatient treatment, outpatient services provide a bridge between structured residential care and full independence — reducing the risk of relapse during that transition.

Consistent Psychiatric Oversight

Ongoing access to psychiatric care and medication management means changes in mood, side effects, or emerging symptoms get addressed quickly, not at the next scheduled check-in months away.

Individualized Attention

One-to-one counseling means sessions are shaped entirely around your circumstances, not a fixed group curriculum.

Accessible From Anywhere in Vermont

With most appointments delivered by telehealth, outpatient treatment removes the transportation and scheduling barriers that keep a lot of Vermonters from getting consistent care.

Real-Life Integration

Because outpatient treatment doesn't require stepping away from daily responsibilities, clients get to practice recovery skills in the context of their actual lives — at work, at home, in their existing relationships — with clinical support close by.
